Abstract

This article examines Qur’anic recitation on sidewalks as a Living Qur’an phenomenon that reveals the encounter between religious expression, Islamic preaching, faith internalization, and the ethics of public space. Unlike many Living Qur’an studies that focus on pesantren traditions, communal rituals, memorization, or the recitation of selected surahs, this article places sidewalk Qur’anic recitation in conversation with international scholarship on Qur’anic recitation, Islamic soundscapes, public piety, and the visibility of Islam in public space. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach in Banten. Data were collected through literature review, document analysis, observation of documented phenomena, and critical engagement with the fatwa issued by the Indonesian Ulama Council of Banten Province concerning Qur’anic recitation on sidewalks. The findings show that sidewalk recitation is a performative reception of the Qur’an oriented toward public preaching, habituation of Qur’anic reading, and the strengthening of religious identity. However, faith internalization cannot be reduced to symbolic visibility in public space; it must be embodied through Qur’anic etiquette, contemplation, public benefit, respect for pedestrians’ rights, and the avoidance of harm. The novelty of this article lies in integrating Living Qur’an studies with public-space ethics and maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, thereby reading Qur’anic practice not only as religious expression but also as a social practice negotiated with public rights and urban order.
