Arabic Language and Literature Study Program Holds Gender and Literature Seminar

FUDA-The Arabic Language and Literature Study Program, Faculty of Ushuluddin and Adab UIN Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten held a Gender and Literature Seminar with the theme: “Feminist Criticism: Questioning Women and Literary Texts” on Friday, June 28, 2024 at the Fuda Hall, 2nd floor.

The event was attended by the head of the Center for Gender and Child Studies (PSGA) LP2M UIN Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten Dr. Iin Ratna Sumirat, M.Hum. In her speech she said that “Faculty of Ushuluddin and Adab is the first time to hold an event about Gender in UIN SMH Banten, and hopefully followed by other faculties. According to her, the position of women and men does not have to be the same in various aspects, women are still women”.

In this Gender and Literature Seminar, Dr. Rizky Handayani, M.A. from UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, presented a speaker who discussed feminism and literature. According to her, Feminist is A movement to fight for equal rights and eliminate all forms of discrimination on the basis of sex.  Which in its scope discusses the Movement, Thought, Gender Studies and Feminist Literary Criticism. By focusing on how gender is represented in literature, feminist literary criticism can show how certain texts challenge traditional constructions of femininity through the articulation of women's experiences in women's voices.

Literature and the Gender Argument consists of several elements, among others:

  • ”every avenue of power within society, including the coercive force of the police, is entirely in male hands" (Millet, 1969:25).
  • It is not biology but the social organization of biological differences that produces and perpetuates gender differences. In addition, sexual relations are unequal, with men establishing and maintaining their dominance over women.
  • On this basis Millet reads literary texts as representations and developments of these male-female relations and so instances of sexual politics.
  • Sexual politics is a pioneer in the analysis of masculinist historical, social and literary images of women and is a formative text in feminist literary criticism.
  • Using literature as a source has helped to establish literary writing, study and criticism as domains especially appropriate for feminism.

The Gender and Literature Seminar organized by the Arabic Language and Literature Study Program at the Faculty of Ushuluddin and Adab was attended by around 80 students and several lecturers and staff members which was held at 08.00 to 11.30 WIB.
