Welcoming the Future of the Librarian Profession in Banten, FUDA Conducts Seminar “The Future of the Librarian Profession in Banten”

FUDA | Monday (07/31/2023) - The Faculty of Ushuluddin and Adab, UIN Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten held a seminar with the theme “The Future of the Librarian Profession in Banten.” FUDA courtroom lt.2, became the venue for this seminar. The seminar was held on Monday, July 31, 2023, at 08.00-12.00 WIB.

The seminar was attended by the Dean, Vice Dean, Head of Study Program and Secretariat of IPII, lecturers and students of Library Science and Islamic Information Faculty of Ushuluddin and Adab, along with young expert librarians, from Banten Provincial Library. This seminar aims to increase understanding of the role and future challenges in the librarian profession in Banten, and to develop relevant skills and knowledge to deal with them. In addition, to strengthen the synergy between students, academics, and librarian practitioners in preparing a better future for the librarian profession is also part of the important objectives of this seminar.

The Head of the Islamic Library and Information Science Department, Hadian Rizani, S.S., M.Hum, delivered a speech. He hoped that this seminar would provide an overview of the profession that would be carried out to IPII students.

“I hope and pray that when Islamic Library and Information Science students graduate, hopefully they can be istiqomah and always enthusiastic about achieving their goals and dreams, especially in the scientific field they are currently studying.”

The seminar was opened directly by the Dean of the Faculty of Ushuluddin and Adab, Dr. Mohamad Hudaeri, M.Ag. He hopes that this seminar will be able to provide knowledge and direction from the speakers, so that librarians and prospective librarians are able to face the challenges that will be faced in the future, especially for students of Library Science and Islamic Information.

Mr. Ashabul Kahfi, S.Ip. was the guest speaker at this seminar. He is a young expert librarian at the Banten Provincial Library. He explained that the duties of a librarian.

“The task of librarians is not only about organizing books, managing books and so on. But the duties of librarians, namely managing and maintaining collections of library materials, compiling cataloging and classification, providing reference services and assistance to users, creating public service programs, developing collections of library materials, collaborating with institutions, other libraries and collaborating with other libraries, and providing training.” Explained Mr. Ashabul Kahfi, S.Ip.

He also explained that the condition of libraries in Banten is influenced by several factors such as: local government policies, budgets and resources, literacy and public interest in reading, information technology and digital transformation, librarian education and development programs. And based on the development index indicator, the adequacy ratio of library staff in Banten is 1: 40355, which means that 1 library staff serves 40355 residents.

And he explained that library graduates are not only librarians, but can also become archivists, library and information consultants, web designers and library IT, database administrators, ASN for all institutions / ministries, BUMN / BUMD, and can also become lecturers / teachers. And for job opportunities still very open for graduates of library science, the ratio of the number of librarians in Banten is still not sufficient, so there are still many librarians needed in Banten.
