UIN Public Relations – The Deputy Governor of Banten Province participated in the Rector’s Cup Chess Tournament for High School and Equivalent Students throughout Banten Province, held in conjunction with the 64th anniversary of UIN Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten. The event took place at the Multifunction Hall on Campus 2 of UIN SMH Banten on Thursday, October 15, 2026.
The tournament, which features men’s and women’s individual rapid chess categories, was organized through a collaboration between UIN SMH Banten, the Deputy Governor of Banten Province, and the Banten Provincial Board of the Indonesian Chess Association (PERCASI).
In his report, the Chess Tournament Coordinator, TB. Achmad Bachtiar, stated that the competition was attended by 40 participants from 26 schools and madrasahs across various regions of Banten, including Lebak Regency, Tangerang Regency, Cilegon City, Pandeglang Regency, and Serang City. He also expressed his appreciation for the participation of a participant with a disability who competed in the tournament.
“This tournament was attended by 40 participants from various schools and madrasahs throughout Banten Province. What caught our attention and made us all proud was the presence of one participant with special needs. Despite his visual impairment, his passion for excelling in chess is truly remarkable,” said TB. Achmad Bachtiar.

On behalf of the Rector of UIN SMH Banten, the Head of the Bureau of Academic Administration, Student Affairs, and Cooperation (AAKK), Dr. Hj. Siti Aminah, M.Pd.I., officially opened the tournament. In her remarks, she emphasized that the Rector’s Cup Chess Tournament is one of the university’s efforts to identify promising young chess players and provide them with ongoing training at the university level.
“We are grateful for the enthusiasm of the participants and the PERCASI Banten leadership. The Rector’s Cup serves as a gateway for us to discover promising young talent. At the PTKN level, chess competitions are held regularly every year. We hope that the high-achieving young participants will eventually continue their education at UIN SMH Banten and become part of the university’s contingent, particularly in preparation for the 2028 PORSI JAVARA 3 event, in which UIN SMH Banten will serve as the host,” explained Dr. Hj. Siti Aminah.

On the same occasion, Banten Deputy Governor Dr. H. R. Achmad Dimyati Natakusumah, S.H., M.H., noted that chess relies not only on strategy but also embodies life lessons and leadership values. He likened the students to pawns on a chessboard who have the potential to grow and become future leaders.
“These students are like pawns on a chessboard. Don’t underestimate pawns, because if they are guided, nurtured, and equipped with knowledge, they can go on to become anything—ministers, government officials, soldiers, police officers, or professionals. ”Therefore, we must encourage the younger generation to continue learning—one way being by pursuing higher education at UIN Banten,” said the Deputy Governor of Banten.

As a gesture of support for the development of chess among school and college students, the Deputy Governor of Banten symbolically presented an operational grant of Rp. 5,000,000 to the organizing committee.

In addition, the Deputy Governor also participated in a chess tournament against members of the UIN SMH Banten academic community.

After a day of competition and strategic battles that lasted from morning until afternoon, the tournament crowned champions in each category.
In the boys’ individual category, first place was won by Kiki Tayeb from SMK 2 Pasundan in Serang City. Second place went to Razan Naufal Rahman Arief from SMA 1 Pandeglang, while third place was won by Firman Amali Alghifari from SMAN 1 Serang City.

Through this Rector’s Cup Chess Tournament, UIN SMH Banten hopes to continue fostering students’ potential in sports while also nurturing talented young chess players who can bring honor to Banten at the national and international levels.
