FUDA Studium Generale: Examining Islam and Muslim Societies in the East and West

FUDA | Thursday (26/10/2023) - The Faculty of Ushuluddin and Adab (FUDA) UIN Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten held a Studium Generale event with an interesting theme, “Studying Islam and Muslim Societies in the East and West.” The event was held on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at the FUDA Hall, 2nd Floor and was attended by a number of students, lecturers, Faculty of Ushuluddin and Adab.

Studium Generale is one of FUDA's regular activities that aims to present the latest and relevant thoughts in the development of Islamic science. This time, the event featured Dr. Haula Noor, MA, a lecturer in Islamic Studies at the International Islamic University of Indonesia (UIII), as the guest speaker.

In his remarks, the Dean of FUDA UIN SMH Banten, Dr. Mohamad Hudaeri, M.Ag., expressed his delight at Dr. Haula Noor's presence as a guest speaker. “Dr. Haula Noor is a very competent expert in the field of Islamic Studies, and we are very fortunate to be able to listen to her views on important issues in Islam and Muslim societies in the East and West. Moreover, she is also a doctoral alumni from Coral Bell Australia. Therefore, I hope that the students, especially the new students, will seriously listen to the material that will be delivered by him.” Said Dr. Mohamad Hudaeri, M.Ag.

This Studium Generale also featured outstanding students of the Faculty of Ushuluddin and Adab in 2023, as well as giving awards and rewards to them. The Vice Dean for Student Affairs and Cooperation, Dr. H. Aang Saeful Milah, M.A. mentioned the names of outstanding students in academic and non-academic fields from international to local levels. Academic achievers include 10 international students and 6 national students. While the non-academic field includes 1 student at the international level, 32 students at the national level, 1 student at the provincial level, and 1 student at the city level.

Dr. Haula Noor, MA. opened her presentation by outlining the importance of an in-depth understanding of Islam and Muslim societies in the East and West, given their significant influence in global dynamics. She also discussed the cultural differences, history, and challenges faced by Muslim societies in the two regions.

Mrs. Wina Sumiati, M.His., lecturer of History of Islamic Civilization UIN SMH Banten became the moderator in this studium generale event. She guided the discussion session that took place. The audience, especially students, were very enthusiastic to ask questions to the speakers. Dr. Haula Noor answered questions from various participants. Some of the issues raised in the discussion included the relationship between Islam and democracy, the role of women in Muslim societies, and how to overcome the stereotypes that often arise against Muslim societies in the West.

This event not only provides new insights to FUDA students of UIN Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten, but also a good opportunity to dialogue and exchange ideas on important issues in Islam and Muslim societies. This Studium Generale is part of FUDA's efforts to continue supporting the development of knowledge and a deeper understanding of Islam and Muslim societies, both in the East and in the West.
