FTIK UIN SMH Banten Hosts the 5th AICEL, Discussing AI Integration and Digital Transformation in Islamic Education

UIN Public Relations – The Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Education (FTIK) at UIN Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten will host The 5th Annual International Conference on Islamic Education and Language (AICEL 2026) in the Auditorium on the 3rd floor of the UIN SMH Banten Rectorate Building, Tuesday through Wednesday (October 13–14, 2026).

With the theme “Integrating Artificial Intelligence and Digital Transformation in Regional Islamic Education: A Strategic Pathway Toward the Sustainable Development Goals,” this international conference featured five speakers from Indonesia and abroad: Dr. Aisling Oboyl (Queen’s University Belfast, United Kingdom), Dr. Djati Handoko (University of Indonesia), Dr. Saifaldin Idris Onya (University of Khartoum, Sudan), Prof. Dr. Ahmed. J. Ubaid (University of Kufa, Iraq), and Ts. Dr. Mohammad Ridhuan bin Mohammad Jamil (Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI), Malaysia).

The 5th AICEL served as a forum for academics, researchers, faculty members, education practitioners, and students from various universities to discuss developments in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation in Islamic education, while also formulating strategies for the sustainable use of technology.

In his report, the Chair of the Organizing Committee, Dr. Juhji, M.Pd., noted that AICEL 2026 was met with great enthusiasm from the participants. This year’s conference featured 78 scientific papers written by 232 authors from 25 universities in four countries: Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam.

“Through this conference, we hope to broaden our academic horizons, share research findings, strengthen international networks, and build sustainable collaborations among stakeholders in Islamic education. This serves as an innovative forum for dialogue to generate high-quality, inclusive, and technology-adaptive solutions,” said Dr. Juhji, M.Ed.

The Dean of the Faculty of Islamic Education and Communication (FTIK) at UIN SMH Banten, Prof. Dr. H. Subhan, M.Ed., emphasized in his remarks the importance of using technology wisely while upholding ethics and educational values. According to him, advances in artificial intelligence must be balanced by strengthening educators’ moral integrity and spiritual wisdom.

“There is one thing technology can never replicate. Although AI is very fast, we as Tarbiyah practitioners—as educators—are absolutely certain that technology can never replicate a heart, moral integrity, and spiritual wisdom. While AI can provide us with quick answers, Islamic education teaches our students which questions are truly worth asking in life. FTK does not resist technology, but guides its use with a clear purpose and strong ethical values,” emphasized Prof. Dr. H. Subhan, M.Ed.

Meanwhile, the First Vice Rector of UIN Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten, Prof. Dr. H. Nana Jumhana, M.Ag., who was present on behalf of the Rector and officially opened the event, stated that digital transformation is not only about using applications or converting documents to digital formats, but must also be able to improve the quality of learning.

“The use of AI must adhere to the principle of human augmentation, not human replacement—technology is meant to enhance human capabilities, not to replace the roles of teachers or professors. Furthermore, the integration of technology must be inclusive and uphold the principle of ”leave no one behind,’ in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “We hope this forum will not stop at the mere exchange of ideas, but will continue to lead to joint research, joint publications, and international institutional collaboration that has a tangible impact on society,” said Prof. Dr. H. Nana Jumhana, M.Ag.

Through the hosting of the 5th AICEL, the Faculty of Islamic Studies and Information Technology (FTIK) at UIN SMH Banten hopes to strengthen academic collaboration at the international level while promoting the use of artificial intelligence and digital transformation that is ethical, inclusive, and sustainable in the development of Islamic education.
